Using Spray Fixatives Safely

A spray fixative is a spray used by artists to set their drawings to prevent smudging or damage - kind of like varnish in a can.

There are some debates as to whether you should use a spray fixative as they can alter the look of your artwork (for example, I don’t use them on chalk drawings as it darkens the chalk significantly).

Spray fixatives are also potentially harmful to your health so it’s important you know how to use them safely. Here are some pieces of advice, but please do your own research too just in case there is something I’ve forgotten.

Always read the safety instructions on your spray fixative

All cans of fixative will come with safety instructions on them. Each brand is different so it’s important you read these carefully and listen to them.

Only use spray fixative in a well ventilated area

By this I mean a large room with several windows and doors open or better yet, outside! Further protect yourself by wearing a mask to prevent inhalation.

Don’t EVER spray fixatives near open flames

Spray fixative is highly flammable and spraying near an open flame can cause an explosion. This includes cigarettes and pilot lights.

Always have an adult present if you are under the age of 18

There’s an age limit on buying this product for a reason, please protect yourself and ask an adult to use the product for you.

Avoid contact with eyes - wear safety equipment if you can

The contents of spray fixatives can be really damaging to your eyes so if you can’t wear goggles and get it in your eye make sure to check the safety instructions on how to deal with this event.

These are safety precautions I take to protect myself, to protect my artwork I always do a test of my medium with the spray fixative to see how it will react (a lot of mediums do darken!), shake the can thoroughly to avoid drips and spray at a distance of 50cm. As always, pop me a comment below with your questions and I’ll be happy to answer!

Stay creative!
